David Smith, Gas Systems Supervisor, has retired after 29 years of service with Greenville Utilities. He was hired as an Equipment Operator and has subsequently worked as a Crew Leader, Utility Locator and Chief Utility Locator. David began his current position in 2001. In that role, he was directly responsible for the seven Gas Service Crews that install gas services for residential, commercial, and industrial facilities; meet with customers to turn on gas; unlock gas, water, and electric meters; light customer pilots; respond to inside gas leaks; and trouble shoot problems customers may experience with inside piping or appliances.

David was known for his innovative ideas in helping the Gas Department to be more efficient and productive in a variety of ways throughout his career. Some of his ideas were even implemented in other departments. In fact, an article highlighted some of David's creative ideas and innovations in the May 1993 Spotlight.

"I enjoyed working with the guys in my section," said David. "Thank you to everyone for the 29 years of friendships and family here."

David lives with his wife, Kim, and Kim's daughter, Shaye. His son Alex recently became a teacher. In his free time, David likes to work out and spend time with his friends and family. He plans to stay busy in retirement with house projects and helping out with a friend's business.
