Human Resources Specialist I
October 31, 2016

Before coming to GUC, Human Resources Specialist I Kay Spriggs worked at Rubbermaid for 23 years.  When the company closed down, she was back to square one on her career path. But according to Kay, losing that job was a blessing in disguise.

"Fortunately, with my severance package, I was able to do something I'd always wanted to do: go back to school," she said.

Kay first attended Pitt Community College and graduated with an associate's degree in Office Systems Technology. She then attended Liberty University online and received her bachelor's degree in Multidisciplinary Studies.

Next June will make 10 years that Kay has been with GUC, and her love of helping others is what makes her job so worthwhile. You can tell she loves her job through her warm smile and good old fashioned customer service: the kind where she knows your name and isn't afraid to crack a joke.

As most already know, Kay is the face of HR, as she is the first person you meet when you enter the HR suite at the Operations Center.  She assists in the overall administration of the Human Resources Office, including answering questions about job postings, applications, benefits, E-Business Suite (EBS), and serving on interview panels. She also served on the OPTICS Core Team that helped launch EBS.

"The best part of my job is providing exceptional customer service," Kay said. "Customer service is a big thing here."

Kay and her husband, David.

Originally from Pitt County, one thing many may not know about Kay is her love of fishing or her passion for praise and worship music. "I love fishing. I fish every chance I can get," she said. "My husband, David, and I rent a beach house for a week at the time and it's very relaxing. When I'm fishing, I don't think about problems."

Kay also enjoys bringing her family together for fish fries and cookouts. She and David's immediate family include daughter Montisha (33), God-daughter Shray (18), and their dog Snowball (13). Kay also has seven brothers and two sisters.

When not fishing or cooking out with family, she spends most of her weekends at Holly Hill Free Will Baptist Church in Belvoir. An avid praise and worship leader and pianist, Kay spends long hours preparing each week.

"It takes a lot of my time to rehearse on songs that they give me," she said. "As a group, we also rehearse twice a month, and I play for the choir every fourth Sunday."

When she's not singing praises at church, Kay is greeting GUC customers and employees with a smiling face and her passion for serving others.
