Underground Lineworker Third Class
January 30, 2019

From hurricanes to rodeos, Underground Lineworker Remington Gaskins has been able to experience a lot in his two years as a Lineworker and three years with other crews at Greenville Utilities.

Remington joined GUC in 2014 as a Buildings and Grounds Co-op before moving to the Electric Department’s Meter Section and ultimately line work. The Underground Service Crew that he recently joined handles installation of underground secondary services in residential areas and assists in the repair of secondary cables. They also work on underground risers, where overhead electric converts to underground. Having previously worked on a substation crew for two years, this is a skill Remington brings to his new crew.

“So far, what I’ve enjoyed about the new job is being able to work almost daily with more types of equipment,” he said. “I also like that we get to help other crews occasionally. Every day and every job is a bit different.”

Before moving to an underground crew, Remington was part of the substation crew that, among other projects, helped build the new Point of Delivery Substation off Mills Road (230kv South). He was also part of the mutual aid crew that traveled to Florida to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017. “I learned a lot from that experience,” he said.

Remington said he also learned a lot during his two years of participating in the Lineman’s Rodeo organized by the North Carolina Association of Municipal Electric Systems. No stranger to competition, he’s been on GUC’s softball team and bowling league as well.

He’s also no stranger to the great outdoors. “I’ve always loved being outside hunting and fishing, so what better way to earn a living than working outside.”

Born and raised in Ayden, Remington grew up on his grandmother’s farm and developed a passion for the outdoors, especially with hunting and firearms. In fact, his first job out of high school, while attending Pitt Community College for Industrial Systems Technology, was at a gun shop. During his spare time, Remington now enjoys working on his grandfather’s hunting preserve in Clayroot.

“We get hunters from all over the country,” he said. “They come with all skill levels from beginning to advanced, and it’s quite an experience to be a part of that. It’s fun to meet new people and to welcome back those who have been coming here for years.”

Remington says this is also what he enjoys most about GUC. “My favorite thing about working at Greenville Utilities is the fellowship with my coworkers, and getting to learn new skills.”
