Lighthouse Mid-Year Update

Lighthouse Mid-Year Update

August 6, 2019

Mid-year is a good time to share an update on the Lighthouse process.

Safety first!
In reviewing recent observations data, the Steering Team has noticed that not using PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) has shown up consistently as a behavior that puts employees at risk. To be more specific, observers have most frequently seen that employees have not been using eye protection (i.e. safety glasses).

Information about eye injuries:

  • The Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that 1,000 eye injuries occur in the workplace every day.
  • Prevent Blindness America estimates that 125,000 eye injuries happen in the home every year, and over 40,000 sports-related eye injuries take place yearly.
  • Numerous safety experts and medical professionals believe that 90% of all eye injuries are preventable by wearing appropriate safety eyewear.

GUC’s Stores Warehouse has a variety of protective eyewear, as does our clinic. Please make sure you’re protecting your vision so we can all see the future!

Lighthouse By the Numbers
We’ve seen very consistent numbers of observations so far in 2019. That’s important because during each one of these observations, employees were able to have a conversation about continuing safe behaviors and discuss how to avoid at-risk behaviors.

The chart below shows an overview by department:
