A strong digital presence is one of the main strategic components for successful communications at any utility, and every day, Communications Specialist Erin Walton helps to create a perfect image of Greenville Utilities in a digital world.

Erin joined GUC’s Public Information Office (aka, “Pub Info”) two years ago and is mainly responsible for creating graphic design layouts for all our internal and external print and digital communications. Some examples include Spotlight (our employee newsletter), Connections (our customer newsletter), social media posts, advertisements, displays, posters, brochures, and fliers, just to name a few. Most recently, Erin designed wraps promoting “What Not to Flush” and “Cease the Grease” messages for two of our sewer trucks.

She is also responsible for most of the photography taken through the Public Information Office. Erin takes photos of GUC employees for all communication pieces, including social media. She also often represents GUC at different public events and creates beautiful displays for our booths.

To help with all these tasks, Erin uses tools such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Lightroom, along with professional photography equipment. She says she enjoys the creative process and stays on top of the trends in graphic design and photography.

“The tools and trends for graphic design and digital communications are constantly changing, especially with social media,” she said. “It’s fun to keep up with it all and use it to tell GUC’s story and to highlight our employees.”

Erin also serves as Secretary of the GUC United Way Committee and helps with the annual United Way Fundraising Campaign. Among her many job tasks, photography is one of her favorites because it also happens to be a hobby she’s enjoyed since 2007. Plus, it allows her to do something else she loves at GUC, getting to meet people, make connections, and work in different locations. “I feel lucky to be in Pub Info because I get to be involved in a lot of projects at GUC,” said Erin.

A Greenville native, Erin graduated from D.H. Conley High School, and then received an Associates in Advertising and Graphic Design from Pitt Community College. Before GUC, Erin gained nine years of experience as a graphic designer at The Daily Reflector and The Hammock Source.

This year, Erin and her husband, Levi, are celebrating their 10-year wedding anniversary. They have a five-year-old son, Abe, who just started kindergarten at Wintergreen Elementary. In her spare time, Erin likes kayaking, spending time outside, discovering beautiful places in North Carolina, and traveling with her family.

Even in her free time, Erin enjoys finding the beauty in the ordinary and sharing that with others through her photography and creative skills.
