May 12, 2020

Matthew May celebrates one year at GUC this month. As a Cashier, he is one of our employees who provides services for our customers at the Express Office, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Matthew works in the Finance Department’s Collections Section. This group records, deposits, and submits an accounting of all receipts to the Accounting Section. Matthew is responsible for processing customer payments, preparing daily bank cash deposits, and assisting customers with any billing questions they have about their accounts. During this challenging time, he also takes extra safety precautions with our customers by wearing a mask and gloves and regularly sanitizing the tubes that are used for drive-thru transactions. Matthew also answers all questions and concerns from customers regarding the new ways GUC is operating due to COVID-19. “We are trying to be as safe as possible,” said Matthew. “I’m also trying to give the feeling of ease and comfort to our customers and let them know that we are here for them.”

Matthew shared with us that interacting with customers and working with the Cashier Team is what he enjoys most about his job. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know my coworkers and our customers,” he said.

Matthew said he also likes the opportunities employees have to interact with the community through various events that GUC participates in year-round He especially enjoyed being in the Greenville Jaycee’s Christmas Parade because it gave employees the chance to connect with each other and the community.

A Greenville native, Matthew graduated from North Pitt High School. He then took courses in the Information Technology program at Pitt Community College, and later transferred to Beaufort Community College where he is currently pursuing his Associates in Business Administration.

Matthew and his wife, LaShonda, have been married for 13 years and they are happy parents of four kids, Jamari (12), Jamiya (11), Jalisha (6), and Jared (1). LaShonda works as an Assistant Principal at Northwest Elementary School. Matthew is also close to his mom and grandmother. It was his mom who told him about the job opportunity at GUC last year. “I thank her all the time for making me aware of this opportunity,” said Matthew. Another person who played a huge role in Matthew’s life is his grandfather, Azell Payton, who also worked at GUC. Mr. Payton began his career as GUC’s first official mail courier,  was promoted to a Stock Crew Leader for Stores, and then retired in 2000.

“I feel honored to work at the same place where my grandfather worked and retired,” said Matthew. “I think about him every time I walk through these doors.”

In his spare time, Matthew likes to travel and especially enjoys exploring cities. His favorite destinations are Virginia Beach and Charlotte.
