Lighthouse Barrier Removed: Dump Trailer

July 22, 2020

When Gas Department employees install gas mains , they use a hydraulic fusion machine to connect the mains. To transport the fusion machine to each worksite, they were using a dump trailer.

During a Lighthouse observation, it was noted that the dump trailer put employees at risk. When the trailer was tilted to load and unload, the machine could roll back or even flip over, possibly injuring the employee.  The open trailer also made it easy for loose materials to fall out.

To remove this risk, crews are now using an enclosed trailer with a ramp. The fold-out ramp allows employees to safely drive the machine on and off the trailer, with no risk of rolling back or flipping over. There are also shelves inside the trailer that safely store tools and materials, eliminating that previous risk as well.
