“Smooth Operators” Bring Home State Trophies
They call themselves the “Smooth Operators” and things went smoothly for them at their state competition back in late December. This group of Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) employees competed at the 21st annual Operations Challenge at the North Carolina One Water conference in Raleigh and came in first overall along with first, second, and third place finishes in all five of the events!
GUC’s team includes Chris Hill, Bryon Orr, Julius Phillips, Kyle Meeks, and Steve Hedgepeth. This is the third time our team has participated in the NC One Water competition, which included events in Collections (pipe tapping), Lab, Safety, Pump Maintenance, and Process Control (WWTP simulator and exam). These events are designed to test the diverse skills required for the operation and maintenance of wastewater facilities, collection systems, and laboratories.
Our team placed first Overall, first in Collections (pipe tapping), first in Laboratory, first in Pump Maintenance, second in Process Control, and third in Safety.
“I’m proud of this team,” said WWTP Facility Manager Jason Manning. “GUC formed an Operations Challenge Team three years ago to grow professionally. Through teamwork and much effort, they have progressed from beginners to state champions.”
Congratulations again to Chris, Bryon, Julius, Kyle, and Steve!
