Cherlyn Barrett Retires
Cherlyn Barrett has retired with 34 years of service with GUC. As a Gas Engineering Assistant II, she worked with our customers to make sure everything was handled correctly with getting service connected at their homes and businesses. Cherlyn predominantly helped expand natural gas throughout the west side of Pitt County.
Her work process involved working one-on-one with customers, obtaining all required permits, and estimating the labor and materials required for the jobs. She worked with the engineering side of GUC’s operating departments so that everyone was aware of the project requirements for services or mains to be installed in a timely and professional manner.
She also worked closely with vendors and contractors, such as North Carolina 811 for utility locates, NC Department of Transportation for rights-of-way amendments, and Piedmont Natural Gas.
Cherlyn started out in Gas as a Clerk Typist before moving into a Drafting Technician role and then Engineering Assistant. She said that GUC has been a great place for her to work, and that she appreciates all the support she’s received during difficult times. “When you're down, it's good to know your coworkers are there for you,” she said. As to her biggest accomplishment in her career here, she said, “I take pride in looking at a map and knowing I had a lot to do with helping the growth in the west side of our gas service area.”
In retirement, Cherlyn looks forward to honing her cooking skills. “My nieces and nephews are trying to get me to start a cooking channel on YouTube,” she said. “I also need to work on things at home that have been put on the back burner.” In addition, Cherlyn has plans to take as many classes as she can at Pitt Community College, starting with cake decorating, wood working, and glassmaking.
Cherlyn, we wish you the very best of times in retirement!
