A Time For Science Expo
GUC employees participated in the annual A Time for Science/NC Museum of Natural Sciences STEM Expo on September 27th. The Electric, Water, and Gas Departments offered educational, hands-on demonstrations for more than 900 visitors. Grow in Greenville
Thank you to Juanita Sims and Lena Preville (HR) for representing Greenville Utilities' partnership with the Greenville ENC Alliance at the kickoff of their Friday Night Lights initiative at North Pitt High School on September 5th.
Council on Aging
Jonathan Sergeant (Energy Services) spoke to seniors about energy savings on September 11th at the Pitt County Council on Aging’s Ayden location.
WWTP Tour
On September 30th, seniors from Cypress Glen toured the WWTP. Thank you to our WWTP staff for giving them an inside look at how wastewater is treated and returned safely to the environment.
Education & Career Fairs
Thank you to the following employees for assisting with career fairs in September & October:
- Nick Klapp (IT), Tracy Williams, and Stella Harris (HR) represented GUC the morning of September 24th at ECU’s Fall Job & Internship Fair.
- Aracely Smith (HR), Andy Anderson (IT), Jacob Swink (Electric), and Alan Cummings, Joey Breeden, and Mike O’Brien (Gas) met with students the afternoon of September 24th during ECU’s Science, Engineering & Technology Fair.
- Aracely Smith (HR) represented GUC at the Elizabeth City State University Fall Career Fair on September 25th.
- Our Human Resources staff attended the “Better Skills, Better Jobs Fair” on October 2nd at the Greenville Convention Center. The job fair included approximately 120 area business and industry partners, including Pitt Community College, ECU, and apprenticeship programs. Many thanks to the following employees for representing GUC at the event: Adam Wainwright (IT), Aracely Smith, Juanita Sims, and Leah Herring (HR).
- Thank you to Cort Bazemore, Tracy Williams, Aracely Smith, and Carrie Peed (HR) for representing GUC at the Job & Resource Fair at the Washington Civic Center on October 22nd. This event was open to local college and high school students during the morning and adults in the afternoon.
- Jacob Swink (Electric) and Juanita Sims (HR) went to the ECU STEM Center for Education on October 28th and gave a presentation on the Careers to First Tech Challenge Team.
ECU Kid’s Zone
As part of our “Powering the Pirates” partnership with ECU Athletics, GUC is a sponsor of the Kids’ Zone at ECU home football games. The Kids’ Zone is an area inside the stadium, close to Gate 2, where children can play various games. Public Information hosts a table in the Zone, handing out GUC-branded materials and talking to game attendees about the services GUC provides. Thank you to Emily Camacho (Customer Relations), Brad Burroughs (Electric), Logan Smith (Gas), and Tracy Williams (HR) for representing us during the September games. Be sure to stop by our table in the Kids' Zone as the season continues!
J.H. Rose Tennis Ball Drop
Our Electric Department assisted the J.H. Rose High School ladies’ tennis team once again with their annual Breast Cancer Ball Drop on October 4th. This event raises money for Cancer Services of Eastern North Carolina and the Liz Upton Student Scholarship Fund. Liz Upton was the school’s tennis coach for many years before succumbing to breast cancer in 2017. Thank you to Timmy Pollard and Chandler Fornes (Electric) for operating the bucket truck for this event.
Touch A Truck Event
Thank you to Greg Lyons, Alex Congleton, Jordi Barnes (Water Resources), and Josh Harrell and Briley Sutton (Gas) for attending the Touch-A-Truck event at Wintergreen Primary School on October 10th.
Sierra Club Presentation
Many thanks to Scott Mullis (Customer Relations) for visiting the Cypress Glenn Sierra Club’s monthly meeting on October 14th to discuss GUC’s first community solar farm.
Freeboot Friday
GUC returned to Freeboot Friday on October 17th and brought a virtual bucket truck driving experience to share with event goers along with GUC-branded giveaways. Thank you to Emily Garner and Parker Lee (Pub Info); Isaiah Bradshaw, Eban Kea, and Taylor Nethercutt (IT); Paige Wallace (GMO); David McDaniel and Caitlyn McLawhorn (Finance); and Aracely Smith (HR) for helping with this event.
Heart Walk
Thank you to our GUC American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk team captains, team members, and donors who raised more than $3,000 for the AHA in October (as of October 22nd). The donations go toward the science that can create artificial heart valves, help prevent strokes, and someday find a cure for high blood pressure. Thank you to the following captains for organizing teams: Jeff McCauley (Finance), Todd Cannon (IT), and LeAnne Wetherington (Customer Relations). Thank you also to Tracy Williams (HR), David McDaniel (Finance), and Aracely Smith (HR) for handing out GUC-branded giveaways at the event.
Third Street Academy
GUC headed to the Third Street Academy OctoberFest on October 20th for some fall and family fun! Festivalgoers who visited GUC’s table were given goodies and GUC-branded pencils. Approximately 400 people came through the festival in total, so a big thank you to all who helped out: Tracy Williams, Cort Bazemore, and Juanita Sims (HR), and Emily Garner (Pub Info).
Hocus Focus
