John Daughton, Gas Systems Supervisor, has retired with 31.5 years with Greenville Utilities.

John led the Gas Maintenance Section that is made up of six employees who are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Facility, cathodic protection system (corrosion prevention), and SCADA field instrumentation, as well as ensuring that regulatory requirements for each are fulfilled.

John also oversaw the maintenance of GUC’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Fueling Station, two gas regulator stations, and five gate stations. Since the Gas Department must meet the U.S. Department of Transportation rules and regulations for pipeline safety, John also ensured that he and his crews were complying with these standards.

The journey to John’s final role in the Gas Department included General Utility Worker, Equipment Operator, and Gas Maintenance Crew Leader. He’s been in his last role since 2000 and obtained his first supervisory position at the young age of 20. “I believe at the time, I was the youngest crew leader in the Department and might still hold that record,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed working with my guys over the years,” he added. “I love to work, which is good because I’ve been here more than half of my life.”

John started working at GUC just six months after graduating from D.H. Conley High School. He was born and raised in Grimesland where he still lives. He recently purchased a piece of property at Whichard’s Beach in Beaufort County. In addition to having more time to figure out what to build on his new property, John looks forward to doing more yard work and maintenance on his home.

John also looks forward to building a new life with his fiancé, Heather,; especially now that they will have more time to travel together.

We wish you the best of luck and many happy years in retirement, John!
