Butch Mills, Gas Systems Crew Leader II, recently celebrated 35 years of service with Greenville Utilities. Before he joined GUC, he worked in a shipyard where he was a certified structural welder for Navy boats and metal barges. He began at GUC as a Construction General Utility Worker, later becoming a Certified Pipe Welder. From that position, he became an Equipment Operator IV in the Gas Service Department and then Crew Leader II. Butch oversees a crew of four Gas Systems Technicians who install gas mains and build industrial gas meter sets. “I enjoy what I do,” Butch said. “I mainly like training people and seeing them further themselves in the Gas Department or whatever department they move on to.” Over his 35 years of service, Butch said the event that stands out the most to him was the flooding in 1999 after Hurricane Floyd. “That event caused a lot of stress on our system. We all came together as one team. It was also interesting to see other department hierarchies and how they are led.” As Butch looks back on the 35 years, he says it is the people who he has helped in their careers along the way that he is most proud of. “I just thank everyone I have worked with and am glad I can be a part of their success,” he said.
