Three barriers have recently been removed after employees reported safety concerns in two Lighthouse observations. One took place in the gas shop welding bay while the other two happened at the Main Office reception area.
The Gas Department’s welding bay area was flagged for inadequate ventilation. Exposure to welding fumes have the capability of causing a respiratory exposure.
Originally, portable fans were installed to address this issue of welding fumes. For the fans to work effectively, the welding had to happen directly under them. But that wasn’t always happening. Recognizing this was a safety barrier, a propellor exhaust fan was installed within the wall of the shop.
At the Main Office, there were two safety concerns at the reception desk. First, the front desk is entirely enclosed, except for one exit which required a key to manually unlock the door. That becomes a safety issue if there is a need to evacuate the office quickly.
Second, any person sitting at the receptionist desk was unable to see over the high walls of the desk, making it nearly impossible to see who was coming in the two entrances or certain portions of the lobby.
To remedy this situation, live security camera footage was made available on a monitor at the front desk. Facilities installed a second exit and a keypad at the original exit to allow for ease of use in case of emergencies.
