Strategic Plan

A new initiative is underway as a result of updating GUC’s Strategic Plan. A group has been created with members of several area organizations and non-profits who serve our most vulnerable customers. GUC staff will meet with them regularly to open lines of communication and work to together to find better ways and solutions to help those customers.

Representatives from the Department of Social Services, Pitt County Schools, United Way, churches, and other non-profits were on hand for the first meeting on September 30. They learned about programs and ways that customers can get assistance from GUC and other agencies and had the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas.

“This group is an extension of one of our stakeholder groups from the strategic plan update process,” said Director of Customer Relations Colleen Sicley. “We heard from them that they needed more information on a regular basis to help them help those who are truly in need - especially the elderly and those whose income is below the poverty level.”

Many of those in the group were unaware of the programs GUC offered, including the ability to request multiple extensions in one year. Given that and other feedback, plans for conducting these meetings were created and language of “assisting our most economically vulnerable customers” was added to one of GUC’s Core Values.

For this meeting, Pub Info prepared a handout for agencies to give to people who come to them when utilities are being disconnected due to non-payment. The Energy Services team was also on hand to let attendees know about the energy audits available and offer advice about ways customers can save money.

“We were very pleased with the turnout and how engaged everyone was,” said Colleen. “The attendees asked great questions and were interested in learning more about programs and assistance GUC offers.  I’m hopeful the information and handout we shared will reach those who need it and help them find assistance.”

GUC anticipates connecting with this group throughout the year, as needs arise. The next planned meeting will be in the Spring of 2027.
