Michael Silverthorne, Water Resources Systems Operation/Maintenance Technician V, has retired after 30 years of service with Greenville Utilities.

Michael was on a crew whose responsibilities range from medium and heavy construction jobs to water/sewer troubleshooting service work. His crew primarily handled new water/sewer taps and installations.

“It’s been good these last years to see a lot of the guys I’ve worked with out here who are now crew leaders across departments,” Michael reflected. “I’ve worked on a lot of big development projects over the years, like moving and rebuilding mains throughout downtown. What will always stand out the most to me was our work during the Hurricane Floyd flood in 1999. We did whatever was necessary, mostly sandbagging at the Water Treatment Plant and the old Operations Center.”

Over the years, Michael has also won 24 trophies in backhoe rodeo skills competitions against other utilities in the Eastern Water & Wastewater Network. He already has plans to attend this year’s event as a spectator, cheering on the GUC team.

In retirement, Michael said he looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Jenette, and their adult son. “I’ll do plenty of hunting, fishing, and traveling,” he added.

We wish you the very best in retirement, Michael. Thank you for your service!
