For more than 20 years, we have used the Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology, and now, as the system has reached the end of its life, we are transitioning to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).
In simplest terms, AMR transmits meter data one-way to a truck as it drives by and that data is then uploaded to our billing system back at the office. AMI is a network where there is real-time two-way communications with the meter and interconnection with billing, work order, the customer portal, and several other systems automatically.
The switch to AMI is a complex process that will take five years to fully deploy. At full deployment all electric meters will be switched, and all water and gas meters will be retrofitted with new radio technology.
We've made a significant investment in AMI and what’s more important, AMI will provide our customers and our operations departments with real-time data to identify issues, leaks, usage, and even tampering. It will also allow us to better forecast energy needs and anticipate future demand growth.
The conversion to AMI is not possible without the core team and employees willing to put in the work to ensure that it is seamless transition. During this process, we encourage you to bring any issues to light throughout the project. Our goal is to provide excellent customer service as efficiently as possible, and we need your help to achieve this objective.
