In early August, GUC Water Crews started the process of replacing a 12-inch water main attached to the Tar River Bridge on North Memorial Drive. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will soon be replacing the northbound lanes of the 70-year-old bridge. NCDOT’s contractor will be installing a temporary water main on the southbound lane of the bridge while replacing the northbound lane – and ultimately our water main.
On August 10th, our Water Distribution Crews worked non-stop installing new tees and valves on each side of the bridge’s water main. Installing a tee to the valves allows for a bypass to be connected from our water system to the temporary main. Our crews were able to isolate that bridge portion of the main while they did their work.
NCDOT plans to finish the bridge project in the fall of 2025.
