Safety: Looking Back and Moving Forward
Safety: Looking Back and Moving Forward
As we continue to focus on reaching our safety goals at GUC, it’s important to take a look at data and the conclusions we can draw from it. That’s exactly what the Corporate Safety Initiative (CSI) Executive Team did recently, and they discovered some interesting facts.
One positive conclusion of the data highlights the importance of conversations. Incidents – both injury and fleet events – decreased during the second half of the year. During that same time, the number of safety conversations we had increased. As expected, high quality, effective conversations about exposures and ways to stay safe do, indeed, make a difference in reducing incidents.
During 2023, we experienced 18 total injuries – the highest number of injuries since 2016. Of those 18 injuries, 14 were OSHA Recordable, 9 were SIFp (Serious Injury or Fatality Potential), and 4 were Lost Workday injuries (LWD). Compared to 2022, we saw a significant increase in injury trends across all severity categories (OSHA Recordable, SIFp, LWD).
Our fleet data, on the other hand, showed an overall decrease in fleet events from 2022 to 2023. That’s really good!
What will 2024 bring? We expect to continue the trend of increased and meaningful safety conversations. We also plan to focus on increasing the number of exposures identified and resolved through our Safety Governance Teams (Departmental Teams, CSI Program Team, and Lighthouse). To help support that initiative, the CSI Program Team is undergoing a restructuring process to reduce the number of people on the team while still ensuring the right people are included so that solutions can be implemented as needed.
We are on the right track! The future looks bright and safe.
