J.C. Haddock Retires

December 17, 2024

Electric Engineering Assistant II J.C. Haddock has retired with 30 years of service with Greenville Utilities. He started out in the Electric Department on a line clearing crew and worked his way up to Lead Lineman by way of a line crew followed by an overhead construction crew before moving to engineering.

As an Engineering Assistant, J.C. worked in the section of the Electric Department that performs the initial design services required to process applications for new electric services and construction. These types of jobs range from streetlights and yard lights to new subdivisions, circuit upgrades, pole replacements, facility relocation, and Department of Transportation projects.

J.C. spent a lot of his time out in the field with customers, especially builders and developers, and worked with contractors like River City. Over the years, he has served as a Lighthouse Observer, represented GUC at community events to educate customers and children on electric safety, and been on countless mutual aid trips following weather events that caused extensive damage to power systems in other public power towns.

“I’ll certainly miss working with the crews,” he said. “The biggest memory that stands out for me was Hurricane Floyd. That was the hardest storm we had in my time. We worked 28 straight hours just on the first day. I’ll never forget that.” J.C. said he was one of many employees whose personal vehicles were flooded, yet it did not stop them from working almost around the clock.

Born and raised in Pitt County, J.C. says he looks forward to spending a lot more time with his family, especially his daughter, along with hunting and fishing in bass tournaments.

Congratulations on retirement, J.C. You will be missed!
