Danny Lane, Water Resources Systems Operations/Maintenance Crew Leader I (Sewer), has retired after 25 years of service with GUC.
“I always felt that the most important asset of my time at GUC was the people I got to work with: people who care about what they do and help each other out,” said Danny.
Danny supervised one of two crews in charge of the multiple cleaning programs for our sewer lines. Routine cleaning is performed using a mapping grid system to methodically work across 539 miles of sewer mains. The preventive maintenance program identifies lines where stoppages have occurred in the past - cleaning those areas to prevent stoppages from recurring.
Danny and his crew also maintained rights-of-way for our sewer outfalls and some water mains, inspected and maintained force main air release valves, inspected and reported on restaurant grease traps and interceptors, conducted sewer crossing state inspections twice a year, and served as stand-by for other Water Resources distribution crews.
Prior to his current role, Danny operated the sewer camera inspection truck and served on a heavy construction crew. He says his favorite time was working heavy construction, where every day was different.
Danny also assisted with career fairs, community events, and the Greenville Christmas Parade whenever he had the time.
“I’ve been fortunate here at GUC,” he said when reflecting on his GUC career. “I always said to the new guys on my crew to think about everything they do each day and tell me what they can get done by themselves. The answer is nothing. It takes a crew, and sometimes multiple crews, to get our jobs done. I grew up in the country on a farm, so I started here not knowing much about city neighborhoods or utilities. For example, one of my first jobs was in a neighborhood with cul-de-sacs, and I had no idea what my crew leader was talking about when he said we’d be working in a cul-de-sac. Over the years, I tried to remember my own first days here when training new folks. We all have different backgrounds.”
Danny grew up near La Grange, and has lived in Grifton since 1990. He and his wife of 20 years, Virginia Sue, have a blended family of two sons (both retired military), a daughter (nurse), 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Having grown up on a farm with horses, Danny has two of his own horses and looks forward to riding more in his retirement. He also plans to enjoy more hunting, fishing, and golfing.
Danny, we wish you the very best of luck in retirement. Thank you for your 25 years of service!
