A Cool Annual Tradition
A Cool Annual Tradition
As temperatures soar and the hot days of summer are upon us, GUC is making sure those less fortunate don't have to sweat it out. On July 13th, Energy Services employees donated more than 100 box fans, making it feel like Christmas in July for some clients at the Pitt County Department of Social Services (DSS) and the Pitt County Council on Aging (COA).
According to Rick Zeck, Executive Director of the COA, many people are eager to have a fan and to get some much needed heat relief.
"Most of these fans will be gone this week," Zeck said. "We have a waiting list, and we started calling people to let them know as soon as the fans were delivered. This is a really cool thing that GUC does each year, and it helps a lot of people who really need it."
For the last 23 years, GUC has been spreading good summer cheer and we don't plan to stop anytime soon. "Fans are an economical way to get some relief from the heat, and we are pleased to provide them as a gesture of community support," GUC General Manager and CEO Tony Cannon said.
To date, GUC has donated 2,300 fans to needy families in our area, and according to Assistant Director of Customer Relations Scott Mullis, sometimes it's the little things that make the costs of keeping cool more tolerable.
"There are a number of small things we can do in our homes that by themselves aren't much, but when you add them up, you can see some real savings," Mullis said. "A fan is one of the most efficient ways to keep people cool."
There are ways you can get involved as well. The COA is always in need of volunteers. For more information, call 252-752-1717.
