Safety is a top priority for GUC as we provide reliable utility services with exceptional customer service.

That is why, at the beginning of 2025, when we experienced a series of work-related accidents, I had to look at what was going on.

We have an increasing number of younger and less experienced employees. As we grow and recruit new talent, the potential for increased incidents will be more common. To offer exceptional customer service, we may assume that people are able to do jobs that they may not be quite ready to do yet. That’s not acceptable.

It is important to remember that the fabric of our organization has two common threads, one is customer service, and the other is safety. We must consider both all the time in our work.

It is important to take your time to become fully trained and comfortable with the job at hand.  I would prefer you do that rather than take a chance with your safety.

We have come a long way in 35 years regarding safety, but we still have more work to do to reach the vision of zero injuries every single day.

Let’s continue to offer excellent service but also let’s not sacrifice our safety and wellbeing to be marginally quicker. Take the time you need to complete a job and to help teach the employees who are unfamiliar with certain jobs and tasks. For those of you still learning, don’t hesitate to say you need that time and training or to stop a job.

We can make zero injuries a reality by working together.
