SIMPSON TRANSMISSION LOOP: POINT OF DELIVERY to SIMPSON
- PHASE I:
This project, once complete, will provide a new 115kV transmission line from the Point of Delivery #3 to the Simpson substation, completing the transmission loop and a second transmission pathway to improve reliability. As of January 2026 all 85 poles have been installed. The line stringing process will start next, which is estimated to take two to three months. Phase II is expected to begin in 2026-27 fiscal year.
- HUDSON’S CROSSROAD SUBSTATION (part of the loop):
The 115kV to 12.47kV substation, located off Blackjack-Simpson Road, received the delivery of the 125,000-pound transformer in the summer of 2024. It was placed on a 3-feet deep concrete pad at the time of delivery in what looked to be just a field with fencing around it. Concrete foundation bid has been awarded, and concrete will be installed by the end of February. All materials will be on site by May 2026.
PEAK SHAVING GENERATORS
- PEAK SHAVING GENERATOR PLANT:
Facilities to accommodate a 20 MW peak shaving generator plant are being built at the MacGregor Downs Substation. There are currently 4MWs of peak shaving generators operating there. An additional 10MW of natural gas fired generators will start arriving in March. Once they are all onsite, it will take four to six weeks to get them in service.
Water Projects
WATER MAIN REHAB PHASE III:
Since 2018, the oldest of GUC’s water mains have been receiving an upgrade, and Water Resources is in the third phase of this project. The staff developed the water main rehabilitation program to ensure the continued reliability of GUC’s water distribution system. During this third phase, contractors are spraying a durable epoxy lining material into the mains after removing any buildup of sediment. This phase of the rehabilitation project is primarily funded by a $5 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act that is distributed by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality – Division of Water Infrastructure. Contractors are currently wrapping up work on mains located along E. Fourth and Maple Streets and starting work on Elm Street between 10th and 14th Streets, as well as Fleming Street between 14th and Pamlico Avenues. Work has been completed on E. Fifth and W. Fourth Streets. This project phase is expected to wrap up in May of this year (2026).
