The Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church donated a record amount of money to Greenville Utilities’ Neighbor to Neighbor program this year.
This is the 24th year the Women of First Presbyterian have supported the Neighbor to Neighbor program. In past years, they raised money through taste testing luncheons, raffles, and bake sales. Most years, they raised $8-10,000. This year, they held a luncheon which included a raffle and ended up raising $15,000 – the most they’ve ever raised.
GUC matches contributions up to $20,000 each year. With GUC’s match, the Women of First Presbyterian have raised a total of $435,000 since 2001.
The group will be recognized for their efforts during the April GUC Board of Commissioners Meeting.
The Neighbor to Neighbor program meets local needs by providing funds to assist low-income families in Pitt County with their heating bills. It is a voluntary program supported through customers’ tax-deductible contributions.
“Neighbor to Neighbor is another way Greenville Utilities can give back to our community by assisting our customers who are struggling financially,” said Director of Customer Relations Scott Mullis. “We are thankful for other churches, civic groups and individuals who continue to support us and help raise money for this critical cause.”
Neighbor to Neighbor is a partnership between GUC and the Pitt County Department of Social Services (DSS). DSS screens applicants, determines eligibility, and distributes the funds during the heating season of December – March. Since the program began in 2001, $890,045 has been raised by GUC, its customers, and local groups providing heating assistance to those in need.
