ELECTRIC
SIMPSON LOOP: POINT OF DELIVERY to SIMPSON
PHASE I:
The installation of a new 115kV transmission line from the Mills Road Point of Delivery Substation to the Simpson substation will complete the transmission loop. This project provides a second transmission pathway that will ensure customers in the Simpson area receive the most reliable electrical service possible. It also supports the growing need for electric service in the area. Currently, structure poles are being installed. This project was approved by the Board of Commissioners in 2016. The first phase of this project is estimated to be complete by June 2026.
HUDSON’S CROSSROAD SUBSTATION (part of the loop):
The 115kV to 12.47kV substation, located off Black Jack-Simpson Road, saw the delivery of the 125,000-pound transformer in the summer of 2024. It was placed on a 3-feet deep concrete pad at the time of delivery in what looked to be just a field with fencing around it. Construction of concrete foundations and steel structures will begin this winter and early spring. The estimated date of completion is June 2026.
PEAK SHAVING GENERATORS
PEAK SHAVING GENERATOR PLANT:
Facilities to accommodate a 20 MW peak shaving generator plant are being constructed at the MacGregor Downs Substation. Currently there are 4MW’s of peak shaving generators operating there. An additional 10 MW of natural gas fired generators are being installed with an estimated completion date of March 2026.
WATER
BETHEL WASTEWATER SYTEM IMPROVEMENT PROJECT COMPLETE
The Bethel Wastewater Improvement Project construction began in April of 2024 and wrapped up October. It includes the replacement of both the town’s North and Main Pump Stations.
Bethel’s Main Pump Station was previously located in a 100-year flood zone, so the replacement was built outside of the flood plain. It includes around 1,500 feet of new 14-inch force main, which is required for tie-in to the existing force main, and 150 feet of gravity main to tie the existing system to the new pump station. This part of the project also includes more than 50 repairs to gravity mains and manholes throughout the system.
GAS
Gas System Improvements (moving or replacing gas lines to accommodate road expansions)
NCDOT is moving forward with the Allen Road extension, and the construction contracts are out for bid. As part of the project, Gas will abandon the current 4” main and replace it with a new 6” main at the same time as the road is being built.
