John Hart, Water Resources (WR) Operation/Maintenance Crew Leader (sewer), has retired after 24 years of service with GUC.
“I just enjoyed working with everybody – it’s like family here,” John said. “Water, especially our group, is smaller and we all get along great. It’s been a nice place to work. I’ve also enjoyed training the seven or eight new guys on my crew in my 11 years as a crew leader.”
John supervised one of two crews in charge of the multiple cleaning programs for our sewer lines. Routine cleaning is done using our mapping grid system to methodically work across 539 miles of sewer mains. The preventive maintenance program identifies lines where stoppages have occurred in the past - cleaning those areas to prevent stoppages from recurring.
John and his crew also maintained rights-of-way for our sewer outfalls and some water mains, inspected and maintained force main air release valves, inspected and reported on restaurant grease traps and interceptors, conducted sewer crossing state inspections twice a year, and served as stand-by for other Water Resources distribution crews.
Before moving to his current role, John was on a Water Resources heavy construction crew for 13 years. Prior to joining GUC, he worked at Grady White Boats for 15 years and made the switch to GUC because he wanted to do outdoor work. “I like gardening and working outside in the yard. GUC has great benefits, so I took the opportunity,” he said.
John looks forward to joining his wife, Angela, in retirement. She has been retired for two years. They have two adult children, Josh and Nikki. Josh recently joined GUC as Mechanic I. Nikki and her husband, Tony, have two daughters, Aedyn and River.
“We plan to travel some, and I’ll do more gardening and cleaning up my shop.”
John, we wish you the very best of luck in retirement. Thank you for your 24 years of service!
