The 24th annual Electric Department Oyster Roast is slated for Wednesday, December 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Electric Distribution Bay at the Operations Center Support Building.
Proceeds from the Roast will help out local families in need during the holiday season.
The Annual Oyster Roast is an expansive endeavor. Electric Overhead Construction/Maintenance Supervisor and Co-Organizer for the Roast Jeffrey Williams said they usually anticipate 150 to 160 people each year.
That amounts to 300 pounds of shrimp and between 24-27 bushels of oysters, which is approximately 2,400-2,700 oysters.
It takes about 20 volunteers to make the Roast happen.
“We get the 300 pounds of shrimp in September or October, and we clean, prep and freeze them,” Jeffrey said. “About a week before, I am sending out emails reminding volunteers not to forget to bring the supplies that we need, and the day of the roast, we clean the Electric Bay, put out the tables, and start cooking the shrimp and roasting the oysters.”
Electric Managing Administrative Assistant Natalie O’Neal handles the administrative side of the fundraiser by distributing the details to all employees, retirees, vendors and others outside the organization who look forward to supporting this annual event.
The cost to attend the Roast is $40 per person and guests are welcome. Please make checks payable to Electric Family Fund. The deadline to sign up and remit payment to attend the Annual Oyster Roast is December 5th.
