Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) recently earned the Trimble Trailblazer Award. The award highlights organizations that innovate through system integrations, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), or other methodologies.
Presented by Trimble, GUC earned the award for its successful integration of Cityworks, our work and asset management system, with CCS, our customer information and billing system.
GUC was celebrated for obtaining four key achievements which include conducting feasibility and optimization analysis, reducing integration complexity, simplifying IT architecture, and completing the project on time and under budget.
In 2022 and 2023, GUC assessed whether Cityworks could replace Oracle’s Work and Asset Management (WAM) and Mobile Workforce Management (MWM) systems. Combining two tools with different purposes and user groups into one platform proved to be challenging. It required significant workflow alignment and organizational change.
According to Sean Hawley, IT Senior Systems Analyst II, managing a single system for all work enables IT resources to focus more on upgrades, new features, and collaborating with stakeholders.
While consolidating two applications into one, there was an opportunity to review and reduce system integrations and focus on essential needs. This reduced complexity allows for a more resilient approach.
“To be the first utility to successfully integrate these two systems, and to do so on time and under budget, is a significant achievement that required exceptional cross-functional collaboration and visionary leadership from all departments,” said IT Director Andy Anderson.
The cross-departmental team members involved in this project and recognized for this award are Nikia Best-Manual (Water), Wendy Rogers (Electric), Lisa Johnson (Gas), Kenneth Daniels (Meter), Sean Hawley, Aaron Johnson, Adam Wainright, Amber Garris, Kelly Mayo, Alex Li, Courtney Basile, and Michelle Edmondson (IT).
