Gas Systems Crew Leader I Chris Bright learns how to spot the signs of meter tampering.
Tammy Forrest, Support Analyst III, and Jonathan Sergeant, Energy Services Team Lead, have combined forces to offer Greenville Utilities employees insight into the nature of utility theft and the causes of high bills.
The Meter Tampering section, led by Tammy, outlined the many ways people can slow down a meter or divert it all together.
She also addressed the proper steps to take when you encounter tampering and why stopping tampering is critical for safety, legal compliance, and protecting our system.
Attendees were shown real cases of meter tampering on GUC’s system and other utilities that highlight both what has happened and what could happen when tampering goes unchecked.
She stressed that meter tampering is not only theft of utility services, but it is also extremely dangerous and could cause fire damage and loss of life depending on the method and utility service that is being stolen.
“It is important, that if you see something that looks wrong on a meter, you say something and give me a call,” Tammy said.

Jonathan led the High Bill Response section.
In times of extreme weather – hot and cold – customers often go to social media, call in, or come in to ask questions about why their bill is so high.
Jonathan outlined the most common causes of high bills, practical ways customers can save energy, and how to confidently respond when approached about billing questions—whether in the field, the office, or even at the grocery store.
He offered real examples of Energy Audits he had completed for GUC customers. As a licensed contractor, he offered insight to attendees about how the construction of a home can oftentimes be the cause of energy loss and hamper energy efficiency until necessary upgrades are made.
