Cashier I

Cashier Demetrius Holloway is one of the first friendly faces our customers see when visiting our Express Office on Greenville Boulevard. He joined GUC two years ago and works in the Finance Department’s Collections section. This group is responsible for the receipt and deposit of GUC funds. They record, deposit, and submit an accounting of all receipts to the Accounting section.

As a Cashier, Demetrius is responsible for processing customer payments, preparing daily bank cash deposits, and assisting customers with any billing questions or concerns they have about their accounts.

He says one of the hardest parts of his job, but a part that he enjoys, is explaining a more complex bill to a customer. “I try my best to break it down as much as possible for them to understand,” he said.

In fact, interacting with customers is what Demetrius enjoys most about his job. “Everyone is different,” he said. “I like to joke around with customers and try to be upbeat no matter what. That’s the most important thing: knowing that when they left me, they were laughing or smiling.”

He says he also enjoys another challenging aspect of his job, which is assisting customers who don’t speak English or have a hearing impairment. To overcome this, Demetrius always has a pen and paper ready to help him communicate with them. “We’ve found that many of our customers who don’t speak English can still somewhat understand written English,” he said.

Demetrius says that being a Cashier has helped bring him out of his comfort zone. “I’m naturally shy and tend to keep to myself outside of work,” he said, “so the job benefits me personally too. It’s taught me to be more interactive. If I can do it at work, I can do it outside of work – it’s not so bad. I don’t have to always be so quiet.”

A Greenville native, Demetrius entered a program at Pitt Community College (PCC) to help him graduate early from South Central High School in 2010. He then received an Associates in Business Administration from Beaufort Community College as well as a Certificate in Basic Accounting from PCC. Before joining our GUC family, Demetrius worked at Target, where he gained experience as a cashier.

He says growing up, it was always him and his younger brother, Terrance. He’s very close to his mom and brother, so he enjoys spending time with them as well his girlfriend of three years, Tichina. In his spare time, Demetrius likes going to the beach with Tichina and watching action movies. He also likes toying with electronics, always on the lookout for new trends and features.

But his favorite past-time is collecting rare U.S. currencies. His years as a Cashier, seeing rare currencies come across the registers, piqued his interest in learning more about them and starting a collection. To find new additions for his collection, he comes across rare coins and bills by luck and by searching online for a good buy. Among his favorite finds is a Brown Seal $10 bill (see inset).

While Demetrius says he’s thankful to have a job that has taught him to step out of his comfort zone, we are thankful for employees like him who are willing to do just that to provide exceptional customer service.
