Before joining GUC’s Public Information Office almost five years ago, Karin spent 15 years in television production, including WITN and WRAL/FOX 50. Now, she produces all our corporate videos for internal and external communications. She also assists with the GUC Google accounts and GUC-TV, manages the content on our drive-thru and lobby video screens, and assists with multiple other Public Information projects including the Spotlight Newsfeed communications.

Fun fact: Karin loves amphibians and reptiles! She has two White’s Tree Frogs, Frank and Beans, as well as a Leopard Gecko, Rocky.

What are your favorite things about your job? I like that I can do what I love, which is produce videos. I’m able to meet lots of people and visit our different facilities. I’m also able to still grow in my field. Since I’ve started, I’ve earned my unmanned pilot’s license so that I can fly our drone to capture photos and videos from the sky.

What is your proudest career accomplishment? Winning my very first Emmy while pregnant with my first child. I felt like I reached a huge milestone that I was striving for, professionally and personally.

What motivates you to work hard? I want to stand out and create content that makes people stop, watch, and retain their attention.

What projects are you currently working on? My projects constantly change, but lately I’ve been working on a long series of training videos for new employees about how to operate large machinery.

What did you want to be when you were younger? When I was young, I wanted to be a veterinarian. But in high school I wanted to be a meteorologist so I could chase tornadoes like Jo in Twister.

What advice do you offer those who are new to the utility industry? Knowledge is power. Learn as much as you can about everything you can. Only you can make you succeed.

What is your favorite family or holiday tradition? I love Halloween! I love creepy things and dressing up. My children and I drive our decorated golf cart around the neighborhood to trick-or-treat, and I enjoy seeing all the costumes of the kids who come to my house. It’s the best day of the year!

What is your favorite family recipe? I make a unique veggie pasta with six different vegetables. It’s my own recipe that lives in my head, therefore, it turns out a little different every time. But it’s always good!

How would your family describe you in five words? Smart, productive, sassy, organized, and outgoing.

What would you like us to know about your family? My husband, Stephen, and I met in 2005 and have been married almost thirteen years. He is a locksmith and owns the company Loc Doc. Our son, Ty, just turned ten and has a high blue belt in Tae Kwon Do. Our daughter, Abby, is four and loves gymnastics. We also have a two-year-old yellow lab, Jake.

Who is your hero? All our brothers and sisters in the Armed Forces. Their bravery provides us freedom.

Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day? An actress in Hollywood. I think it would be fun to experience the production lifestyle and be on set for a day, but then I would want to go back to reality.

What would you do if you won the lottery? I would travel as much as I could and buy property in various locations to rent out as vacation homes and visit as often as I want.

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island? A knife, a water purifier, and some sort of communication device.

What celebrity would you like to meet? Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He seems hilarious.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Smoothies.

Do you collect anything? Shark teeth! We love to go hunting for shark teeth in the creek.

Do you have any hobbies? I love exercise, photography, escape rooms, and travelling. I’ve solved over 30 escape rooms and visited 11 countries!

What do you want to accomplish this year either personally or in your career? My friends and I would like to visit Hatfield-McCoy Trails in West Virginia. We ride four-wheelers together and the trails are supposed to be amazing there.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work? I love to travel, and I'm always up for an adventure. We bought a camper last year, which allows us to move around easier, and we have a timeshare in Mexico that we visit every other year. Between April and October, my family and I are often on the go visiting new places.
