A father, a handyman, a GUC employee. Kevin Hudson is a man who wears many different hats. Kevin began his career with GUC more than 15 years ago in the Electric Department’s Meter Shop and has subsequently held a variety of positions, including one on the Lighthouse Steering Team. In his current position as a Damage Prevention Technician II, Kevin’s main responsibility is to handle excavation or digging inquiries which keep customers safe and prevents utility lines from being damaged. State law requires both contractors and customers planning excavation or digging work to call NC 811 to request all underground lines be marked. Our locators respond to an average of over 19,000 locate requests per year. When the call is made, Kevin and the others work hard to locate the underground facilities by using a range of different equipment, including ground penetrating radar. Once the facilities are located, they are marked with colored flags and spray paint to indicate the type of service that is underground. Kevin said, “I like Grenville Utilities’ emphasis on safety” for its customers. 

Fun Fact! Kevin is a jack of all trades and enjoys performing electric work, auto-mechanic work, carpentry, and more! "I know how to make something out of nothing,” he said.  

Do you want to share information about jobs you had before GUC? I briefly worked in right-of-way maintenance before joining GUC. 

Did you serve in other GUC roles before landing in your current role? I’ve worked in the Meter Shop, Stores, and Water Resources doing heavy construction and working the valve truck. 

What are some of your favorite things about your job? I enjoy working with different crews both in and outside of GUC, my fellow co-workers, and having a boss that backs us up and serves as a good leader. 

What motivate you to work hard? I’m a big family guy, so providing for my kids and wife, buying them nicer things than I had when I was young is what motivates me to work hard. 

What is your proudest achievement? Being a dad to two boys, ages 13 and 4. 

What was your very first job? Working at the age of 13 on a tree farm with my uncle. 

What advice do you offer to those who are new to the utility industry? Continue to grow as an individual and work hard to become the best asset you can be. 

What is your favorite holiday? Christmas, because I like the excitement my kids have. 

Have you ever had a nickname? K-Hud. 

Who is your favorite singer? George Jones and Alan Jackson. 

Who is your hero? My mom 

What has been your favorite travel destination? The mountains because of the isolation and lack of cell service. 

What would you do if you won the lottery? Buy a 42’ Freeman or Yellowfin. 

Do you collect anything or have any hobbies? Side by Sides, ATVs, and Mud Racing. 

What emoji do you use the most? Crying laugh emoji. 

What app do you use the most? Facebook Marketplace to buy, sell. and trade. 

Coke or Pepsi? Pepsi all day. 

What’s your favorite thing to do when you're not at work? Work on things in my shop and teach my kids how to work on things. 

What is at the top of your bucket list? Fish the Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament. 

If given the chance, what time would you want to live in? 50s-60s because of my “old-soul.” 

What’s your favorite season of the year? Fall 

What’s your favorite snack? Cheddar blasted goldfish. 

What is your favorite restaurant? Texas Roadhouse and their big fat ribeye. 

What is your favorite movie? Any Marvel movie.
