GUC Cell Phone & iPad Transition to FirstNet
GUC Cell Phone & iPad Transition to FirstNet
Over the past few months, IT has been working with all GUC departments to test how FirstNet mobile coverage compares to Verizon. FirstNet is a cellular network that is tailored to first responders and provided by AT&T. Whenever there is a natural disaster or other situation where the cellular network is congested, FirstNet customers get priority.
IT recently presented data to the Management Team that was gathered during the test phase with employees, and the results were clear. FirstNet had better coverage and reception for GUC phones and iPads in just about every situation and location throughout our service area. Combine that with getting priority during cellular congestion situations, and the decision to move was a no-brainer.
Over the next few months, IT will be working with each department to coordinate the transition from Verizon to FirstNet. The iPhones, iPads, and other cellular devices that aren’t ready to be replaced will be upgraded with a FirstNet SIM card. Those that are scheduled to be replaced this fiscal year will come ready to operate using FirstNet.
IT will be the first department to make the transition so they can make sure everything goes smoothly for other departments. Then, the Help Desk will work with department admins to schedule each department’s transition to FirstNet, which will begin in January.
