Safety Milestone
We hit a major driving accomplishment in January! Employees performed their duties and demonstrated safe driving habits without triggering a single excessive speeding event on the AVL (automatic vehicle locating) system the entire month. That’s the first time that’s ever happened. And we did it while driving more than 154,000 miles in 235 vehicles.
Safely driving within the posted speed limit lowers our exposure to serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) and helps keep us and other people on the roads (our family, friends, and customers) safe. How? Driving is the top SIF exposure at GUC and it’s one that we’ve been focusing on recently. Why? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says as speeds increase, so do fatalities. Research shows that a 5 mph increase in the speed limit was associated with an 8% increase in the fatality rate on interstates and freeways, and a 3% increase in fatalities on other roads.
Congratulations and thank you for demonstrating safe driving habits and minimizing our exposure to SIFs in January, which in turn helps us achieve our safety vision: Together, we can manage exposures to make zero injuries a reality each day.
