Ryan Van Scoy has been at GUC for almost nine years. After starting as a temporary Logistics Coordinator in the Electric Department, he is now an Electric Engineering Assistant II. In this role, Ryan is responsible for planning, designing, and estimating site plans, designing jobs in our GIS system, and prepping and creating work orders. He also meets with customers to review the site plans to ensure their satisfaction. 

Fun fact! Ryan goes offshore fishing 20 to 30 times a year, mostly out of Oregon Inlet or Morehead City. 

What are your favorite things about your job? I really enjoy designing and laying out electric infrastructure. I also like seeing everything being built and learning new things, because every situation is different.  

What motivates you to work hard? I like being productive and successful and strive to be the best.  

What was your very first job? I worked at a car wash in high school. 

What did you want to be when you were younger? A baseball player or Marine Biologist. 

Any GUC projects you’re working on that you’d like to share? We have a lot of upcoming projects, such as new subdivisions and the new Royal Farms gas station. 

What advice do you offer those who are new to the utility industry? Stick with it, everyone needs utilities. Learn as much as you can every day and be safe. 

What would you like us to know about your family? I grew up in the Ayden area. I have a 14-year-old yellow lab, Payton. I also have two nephews and one niece who are four, six, and one.  

What is your favorite family or holiday tradition? My family’s annual trip to Ocracoke the week of Memorial Day. 

Do you have a favorite family recipe? My grandma’s chocolate pecan pie. 

Who is your favorite band or singer? I like a lot of different music, but my favorites would be Luke Combs or Stick Figure. 

Have you ever had a nickname? If so, what is it? Taco. 

What would you do if you won the lottery? I would fish every day on a big boat. 

Do you collect anything or have any hobbies? Hunting and fishing. 

What have been your favorite travel destinations? Mexico and the Bahamas. 

Coke or Pepsi? Pepsi. 

What app do you use the most? Instagram and the Weather app. 

If given the chance, what time period would you want to live in? Pre-2000s. 

What is at the top of your bucket list? Going fishing in Madeira, an island off Portugal. 

Who is your hero? My parents and my grandparents. 

What’s your favorite snack? Reese’s Pieces. 

Do you have a favorite sport’s team? ECU. 

What’s your favorite season of the year? Spring. 

Beach or mountains? Beach. 

What’s your favorite restaurant? Any Japanese restaurant or steakhouse.
