July 2019: Featured Employee Eban Kea

IT Support Specialist II
July 17, 2019

We all know to dial 911 in case of an emergency. For any computer-related emergencies here at Greenville Utilities, we dial 1911 to get a fast, professional response from our IT department.

IT Support Specialist II Eban Kea is one of four employees who answers phone calls to 1911 (aka the Help Desk). He also replies to emails related to any technical issues or questions, sets up new computers, and assists with backups. Eban also orders and maintains our Apple products, printers, and scanners.

Eban works across all departments assisting with a variety of questions and problems on a daily basis. This is one of his favorite parts of the job. “Communicating with everybody is what I like best about my job,” he said. “I get exposed to every department here at GUC, which I think is very cool.”

Participation in GUC’s iLead Program in 2018 was a great experience for Eban. iLead is a nine-month internal leadership, education, and development program that launched in 2016. Part of the program requires a group project that focuses on one aspect of GUC’s mission. His group worked on a safety project, and he feels that this experience will help him in future work situations. “I liked being in the trenches with other employees and really getting to know them better and building good work relationships,” he said. “The classes were great as well. iLead helps to analyze what you’ve been doing in the past and how you can improve for the future.”

Eban joined GUC in April 2013. Even before joining our IT team, he became passionate about new technology and gained experience in the IT and customer support field. He worked at several companies, including PC Age, Merisel, IBM/Lenovo, and The Daily Reflector.

Originally from Raleigh, Eban grew up in Washington, North Carolina. He also lived in Illinois and Arkansas but moved back to Washington where he graduated from Washington High School. He later received an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information Technology from Pitt Community College.

Eban’s wife, Amity, is from Greenville. They have been married for 12 years and have two sons Braxton (12) and Anderson (7). Braxton is a Boy Scout and plays soccer for his middle school team. In his spare time, Eban helps to coach Braxton’s soccer team. Anderson likes to play soccer and takes karate.

Eban likes to spend his free time with family. They love to travel and particularly enjoy going to Carolina Beach. They often spend time at the river visiting Amity’s parents in the Blounts Creek area.
