Gas Engineering Coordinator, Jason Cyphers is a man who loves adventure. From hiking the Linville Gorge in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina to kayaking the swift rivers that empty into the Catawba Valley, Jason is there.
Originally from the mountains of Virginia, Jason moved to North Carolina with his family in 1989. He graduated from J.H. Rose High School before attending Pitt Community College, where he received his Associate's degree in Architectural Technology in 1999.
Jason started at GUC in 1998 as a part time Drafting Technician in the Electric Department. "I worked here for about two and half years before leaving to work for a surveyor," Jason said.
However, he came back in 2000 and has been with GUC ever since. Over the last 16 years, Jason has worn a lot of different hats. From an Engineering Tech in the Water Department to Engineering Assistant in the Gas Department, he's gained a wide range of experiences that brought him to his most recent position in the Gas Department.
As Gas Engineering Coordinator, Jason provides support to Gas Engineering Assistants as they tackle projects, work on the Gas GIS system, and review plans from developers, among other tasks.
Jason really loves what he does, and his zeal is contagious. "I love being able to see the work I've done." he said. "Whether it's riding by a subdivision I helped extend gas into, or seeing staff successfully implement a workflow I created."
Coordinating projects and bringing gas to our customers isn't all Jason does. He also serves as a Work and Asset Management (WAM) Core Team Member and is actively involved with the City of Greenville/GUC Wellness Committee.
As if that weren't enough to keep him busy, he also spends a great amount of time serving our nation and our community.
Jason has been a member of the Eastern Pines Fire/EMS Department for 21 years and in 2014, was named a lifetime member. He also serves with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
In the Coast Guard, he has served as part of an aircrew flying search/rescue, safety/security, and logistical missions. Jason said he's traveled up and down the NC coast with the Guard.
There's something else that many people may not know about him though. He is a highly skilled graphic designer and videographer. In fact, Jason has helped the Coast Guard Auxiliary's Public Affairs Department with video, audio, photography, and graphic design projects.
More than anything, Jason loves spending time with his brother traversing the Great Smoky Mountains.
"My brother and I do a lot of backpacking, kayaking, and fishing. I love going to the Linville Gorge," Jason said.
And when he's not enjoying the wilderness, Jason, like so many others at GUC, helps make our community a better place to live, work, and play.
