Chris Hudson Named Volunteer Firefighter of the Year

February 28, 2023

Join us in congratulating Chris Hudson, Underground Lineworker II, for being selected as the Pitt County Volunteer Firefighter of the Year.

Each of the Volunteer Fire/Rescue Stations in Pitt County vote and select a recipient from their department. Chris was chosen as the Simpson Rural Fire Department Firefighter of the Year. Each department then submits its choice to a committee of individuals from organizations outside of Pitt County who are knowledgeable in the skills and disciplines of firefighting. They chose Chris for the honor which was awarded to him at the Pitt County Firefighter’s Association Quarterly Meeting on February 16th.

Chris is the Assistant Chief at Simpson Rural Fire Department where he has served for 20 years. An article from The Daily Reflector about Chris's recognition can be found here: https://www.reflector.com/news/local/three-firefighters-recognized-for-service/article_c1665462-781f-5a97-b49a-f3b12cea10ba.html

He says a family friend encouraged him to join the fire service when he was a teenager. Some of his friends were members of the Simpson department so he joined when he was 16 or 17 years old. “I’ve remained with the department because I love serving the community I live in,” said Chris. “I’m able to do so because of the support of my wife and kids.”

Working to keep people safe is a way of life for Chris. He’s been a GUC Lighthouse Observer for many years, and part of the Steering Team since 2017.

We'd like to take the opportunity to recognize the following GUC employees for the services they provide to their community volunteer fire stations: Keith Clark (Bunyan in Washington), Jason Cyphers (Eastern Pines), George Darden (Red Oak), Grey Elliot (Bennett), Richard Gould (Black Jack), Brian Greer (Simpson), Tyler Haislip (Snow Hill), Jason Hardee (Black Jack), Chris Hudson (Simpson), Diondre Moore (Grimesland), Justin Oakes (Grifton), Josh Owens (Winterville), Jason Owens (Fountain), Sam Ristow (Gardnerville), Tony Rogers (Williamston), Jason Smith (Staton House), Patrick Smith (Staton House), Robert Warren (Staton House & Stokes), and Blake Wingate (Ayden).
