February 2019: Featured Employee Carolyn Jones

Staff Support Specialist I
February 28, 2019

Carolyn Jones really enjoys getting to know our customers, so it’s fitting that she is the first person to greet them at the Main Office in Uptown Greenville. She came to GUC three years ago with more than 30 years of combined customer service experience with Roses and Wells Fargo.

As Staff Support Specialist I, Carolyn oversees the Main Office opening and closing each day and assists walk-in customers with a variety of tasks like providing payment information, issuing parking passes, setting them up to meet with an employee in Credit, Customer Service, Revenue, or Billing, and signing in vendors and guests. She also assists our customers over the phone with a myriad of questions and transferring them to the appropriate department when needed.

When Carolyn isn’t helping customers, she’s helping the Main Office and Customer Relations Department with logging in mail and packages from Fed Ex and UPS and scanning important documents like bank drafts, new service forms, bankruptcy files, and web applications, just to name a few. She’s scanning these documents into a database that our Customer Relations staff can use to better serve customers.

“I really enjoy meeting people, particularly new customers from other cities and states - welcoming them to Greenville,” said Carolyn. “Lots of customers have a story they want to share, and I like listening to them. Sometimes we get some upset customers, but I listen and then try to turn it into a positive situation.”

Carolyn said that since she started working here three years ago, she has made some new friends and reconnected with old friends, neighbors, and teachers when they come into Greenville Utilities. “It’s neat to see faces I haven’t seen in a while.”

Another thing Carolyn enjoys about her job is representing GUC at community events, like PirateFest, because it gives her an opportunity to work with customers in a different setting.

A Greenville native, Carolyn comes from a big, close-knit family of five sisters and three brothers. All are living in North Carolina. Her parents and lots of extended family live in Pitt County and surrounding areas, making it easier to have big gatherings around the holidays, which she enjoys.

Her son, Dontrell, lives in Winterville. He is a retired Army veteran and recently transferred from Pitt Community College to East Carolina University to study logistics. While still in the Army and stationed in Seoul, South Korea, Carolyn was able to visit Dontrell and says that’s been her favorite vacation so far. “I love to shop and I love neat building structures,” she said, “and Seoul had great shopping and lots of structures for me to gawk over.”

In fact, one of Carolyn’s hobbies is photography, and buildings are among her favorite subjects to shoot. “I mostly enjoy taking scenic photos along with new structures and landscapes,” she said. “I got started in photography when I was much younger. I shot my cousin’s wedding with my little point-and-shoot camera and put together a wedding album for them. They really loved it, so I started taking photos of everything after that.”

It’s easy to see why Carolyn enjoys photography. She loves to hear our customers tell their stories, and what better way to help tell a story than through photos.
